The First Day ‘Back’ (and then some more)

4-23-2024 was a somewhat momentous day for me. It was the first day I’ve gone trout fishing since sometime in March of 2023!

The Long and Winding Road?

I like to think of this area as ‘my spot’ but of course it’s public land and it’s really everyone’s.

It was great to see that it hasn’t changed too much.

The mountain is still there. Thankfully it hasn’t been dug up or modified for gas well drilling.

Of course I managed to either let slip off or miss a few fish before I was rewarded… finally.

The Mountain Gem I was hoping for!

Saw a few trees in bloom. I do not know what they are yet but will have to look into them.

I’ll have to go search on the internet but if any of you have any suggestions, please just leave a comment and we’ll see what we come up with. It might be easier though after they get some leaves on them.

Last (for up the run), and I suppose least, I saw some winter-green. I always like to see some of that in the woods and my special spot didn’t disappoint!

I came off the mountain and back down onto Pine for the evening. Saw only a few fish rising so I worked my way down to them. Of course, as earlier, I let the first one slip off! So much for a ‘come-back’! Did I really think I wouldn’t be affected by the last 13 months! Ha! A few more started to rise though and I managed to bring one to net, finally.

Stocked Rainbow but at least I got it to net!

Still for the first day of fishing in quite a while, I can only be grateful for all the people that have helped me get to this moment in time! For these are the moments that I hoped for the past 12 months plus or so and the moments I hope to have for several more years to come. Thank you too all who have helped me get back to at least this point!

Looking down the big crik – Pine Creek!

What worked? Believe it or not, a Quill Gordon did the trick for me! A dry fly worked (parachute style but stay tuned), however, I switched to a Hendrickson and then to a traditional Catskill style QG and got some more interest. Now I find it a little hard to believe that these worked as I thought it would be just too late here the third week of April that the QG’s would be around. But that IS what I got interest in all day up the run and on the big crik! I didn’t SEE ANY in the air and I did look on occasion. Go figure!

The next day I was pretty sore from my excursion/s. But I think I’ll do it again… real soon for it’s still a lot of fun to catch a trout!

ADDENDUM 4-26-2024:

Hopped out into Pine yesterday and fished quite a while. Jumped in just before noon and fished through till late afternoon! This was quite long time for me considering. I have seemed to fair well so, no biggie! Results?

Caught a State stocked Brown after a while – and a Rainbow also some time later.

But the ‘news’ to report is that I did indeed catch my first Brown Trout Club fish in over a year!

4-26-2024 First Brown Trout Club Brownie of my comeback!

Fished quite a while yesterday afternoon! Probably the longest duration out fishing in a long time.

It seems WordPress (the website host) is cropping off the image on the right folks (at least in my ‘preview’ mode of looking at what will be published). This seems to be happening for anyone using a phone to view this post also (and it may happen to additional images if viewing them on a phone).

I tried contacting the WordPress HELP but it’s just sending me to email them and I wanted some live help like they used to support. Oh well. If you would just click on the image of the trout on the right (or any of the images getting truncated while viewing on your phone), I believe you will see the entire fish – until I get this sorted out, it’s the best I can do for now – apologies.

More noteworthy is that I was able to deceive and bring to net my first Brown Trout Club fish since about a year ago. Yippie! Ok, I’m back (at least good enough)!

As Stan Lee would say, “Nuff said!”

What was I using yesterday – again, an emerger worked the best as far as I could tell. I’ll try to post something soon featuring it. It’s a really simple tie actually. So, stay tuned.

Until we see each other again…. I’m an Unintentional Blogger … aka UB.

  2. I’m glad the good stuff is coming back for you, UB. I sympathize. To a much lesser degree, I also went through the wringer 2 years ago with a couple of operations that set me back till slowly, ever so slowly, I returned to feeling human again, and so grateful to enjoy a new day. And yeah, we recently got back from the awesome Mayan wilds of Belize (mostly) & Guatemala. I’m slow with putting up posts these days but I’ll be back with the latest, plus some news from the fishing scene & visits to Slate Run.

    • Hey let me know if you’re in the area. I don’t know if I can ‘keep up’ with any normal person on the stream but you are always welcome to visit! I bet the Belize trip was great. I’ll have to look in to see your posts about it! Take care – UB

  3. Congrats UB! The trout, the woods, the wintergreen, the shadbush blossoms (the white ones), all of us who love Slate Run & care for its life & preservation, welcome you back to the water & wish you a healthy angling season ahead.

    • Thank you Rivertop Rambles! A shadbush tree eh? Thank you for the information. Was pretty nice to see that in the mountains and catch at least one ‘Mountain Gem’. And thank you for the welcome back! It’s been a journey for sure. I still do not have the stamina that I had before all this happened but hopefully most of that will come back too – for crying out loud it’s been a year! Ha! Anyway didn’t you take a trip overseas? I hope it was or is a good trip! Take care and talk with you soon. UB
