The Hex of Pine Creek

Saw this fly at our place on August 3rd. Someone has left a comment on the previous post suggesting that the ‘yeller fly’ was a Hexigenia limbata (a ‘Hex’). I do not think it is as when I took the picture of THIS fly on August 3rd, the dang phone came back suggesting that it was a Hex! And I believe it is.

I didn’t post the fly as Pine soon after flooded and has taken about a week to come down. But, I think if you find some (as my buddy ‘Butch’ up in Kee Kee Run says) ‘frog water’ – that is, some silted water bottom, it doesn’t surprise me that a hex would lay eggs in it. Apparently here along this stretch in murky or silted bottomed areas there must be good enough conditions for limbata’s to hatch (I have seen this fly in years past. Not great numbers, but I would see some sporadically – so it may be around at times! I think this is a little late in the year to see them – the Hex. The trout head for the hills by this time of year. Apparently this fly didn’t get the ‘When to Hatch’ memo!

The exposure of the picture in the middle was adjusted to have a little lower contrast to bring out the features and colors a little better than the other two pictures. So, it is intentionally more ‘grey’ appearing.

This, I believe is a Hexigenia limbata. I wish Pine would stay cold enough that the trout would be around when these traditionally hatch – June-July time-frame. That would make for some interesting fishing!

Till we see each other again…. I’m an Unintentional Blogger!

    • I saw them in Michigan first. When my phone came back suggesting Hexagenia limbata I was somewhat shocked! But then I remembered that there’s a wee bit of ‘muckish’ silt in the area and it kind of makes sense. While this isn’t the first one I’ve seen here over the years, it seems just a little late in the year though for them to be hanging around. I’ve always thought of them as being a June or July hatch – least in Michigan. Thanks for commenting Darrell! UB
